Sugar gliders: good pets?

Anyone here have any experience with sugar gliders? I'm considering buying one since I'm in need of a pet and sugar gliders sound very appealing to me, but I'm still not 100% sure since they cost quite a lot of money. Right now I have about $300 dollars I would be able to spend to get one along with a cage and all the supplies it needs. I'm also a little worried because I can't really afford to take it to a vet if it needs to, I'm not sure how much of an issue that is though.
