Dems vs. Reps? An exercise in futility?

This country has become so divided among party lines that it has permanently damaged our political system. I lean towards democrat ideals, but I am directly opposed to any partisan leaning when it comes to doing what is right. Is it time for the people of this country to stop being schills for their politicians agendas? Where was the issue of gay marriage this time around? Think about it? Don't people need to stop depending on some ancient text to decide how they feel about things? Don't we need to realize that we need to stop calling each other hypocrites? Is our party system and seeping of religion into politics hurting this country?
